13.1.21 Dexter's seminar 4
1. Make a video ( on your phone is fine) of The Great Reset - NO longer than 3 mins long. Please interpret this in any way it suggests to you and upload it onto your desktop so you can share via Zoom
2. Watch - Examined Life - I know I said I was going to give you something lighter - but then I thought it would be better to give you something to think about ,as Christmas is so drawn out this year and the format of this film means you can watch it in bits if you like. It is available on Amazon Prime or to rent.
If anyone knows of any free online access please share to the group.

I decided to also add it to my Knitting folder for MF7004, as it is knitting, but it's actually an animation of knitting. I quite like it, but I know that it could have been much better if I'd taken many more photos, if the lights and background had been better and also if I had a tripod. The jerkiness and naivete of it is familiar though to that kind of stop motion animation, and quite charming. I wrote a proposal, a couple of years ago, to knit a large scale installation and then invite my audience to unravel it. In the end I didn't submit the proposal as I didn't think I could bear to do that much knitting (the time, the labour, the strain on my wrists!) but now I think it could be very interesting to do just that, and to record the unravelling. Maybe it would be more interesting if I unravelled it? I would be in control then... And would I be present, or absent? Absent, I think. Anyway, it does give me ideas for work I can make in a lockdown....This was made on my phone, using 270 photos, which I made into 2 stop motion animations - one unravelling and the other in reverse. I used an app called Slideshow for the animations and then made a movie by joining them using iMovie, again, on my iPhone.
I did in fact make more than 2 animations and several films, changing the speed of animation etc. This is the final cut! I decided that the reverse unravelling had to be quicker than the unravelling, otherwise it got boring. We'll see.
So. this film is made with 540 frames... and it's only 1 minute 27 seconds! How many frames does a full length feature film have??

13.1.21 My reflections on The Great Reset and Examined life
I think this image of a park bench that I passed this morning on my daily exercise sums up the connection between the people behind The Great Reset and the philosophers in Examined life; hopefulness!
Quote imperfectly quoted from Arundhati Roy
The World Economic Forum's Great Reset is based on the premise that
"The pandemic represents a rare but narrow window of opportunity to reflect, reimagine, and reset our world" -
Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman, World Economic Forum.
One of its supporters is Prince Charles, another is David Attenborough.
It has, however, had significant negative reactions.
