23.11.20 Tutorial with Ben
Preparatory notes and reflections
Performance
New performances Body cocoon 5, work in progress and Body cage 2
I'm not sure how to develop this aspect of my work, but realise that it seems to be becoming more and more significant. At the moment the videos of me wearing my sculptures are almost like sketches. I've been thinking of ways to develop these ideas further:
1. Whose body? Every body, somebody, any body, no body? Or me?
It would be interesting to find out how/whether the work changes when it's worn by other people. They have only been worn by me so far.
a) Invite others to borrow a sculpture for a couple of days and take photos/videos of them wearing it in different settings. (Make it Covid safe by quarantining the knitted sculptures between each model)
b) Book the photo studio and invite 5 people to each come and wear one sculpture. Maybe do it a couple of times? Maybe also arrange a photo shoot around the Uni and its neighbourhood? (Find out how many people are allowed in the photo studio at one time.)
c) Invite Alice , who's a dancer and choreographer, to wear them
Look at Anthony Gormley.
2. Situations:
a) Try different settings eg urban, domestic, inside/outside
b) Find out more about using a green screen. (It makes me think of the changeable backgrounds one can choose on video calls.)
3. No body/nobody:
Making my canvas body Stop motion animation or video of the making process.... Making visible the process of making my body without including my body 'The artist is absent'? Making my Frankenstein's monsters....
Ritual
1. Marcus Coates Journey to the Lower World
2. Bharti Kher
3. Midsommar, Ari Aster
4. Eyes as big as plates, Ikonen and Hjorth
Narrative?
Interesting to me about the Scandinavian take on ritual and belonging given my Danish roots.
Think more about about my Scandinavian roots and what it has meant to be half English, half Danish... belonging, not belonging
Also, links with Greek gods eg Thetis, water goddess, mother of Achilles...
And the elements...
Look at Steven Cohen, Chandelier- he wore a chandelier and walked through a slum in South Africa.
What outcome?
Sculpture/ video/ photos / live performance / participation?
Be careful of focussing too much on making...
