30.3.20 Tutorial with Andrea
My first actual tutorial during lock down. I made some notes in preparation. Annoyingly I couldn't share my scree, but I had uploaded some images to Google Drive so that we could discuss my work.
Notes for tutorial, 30.3.20, with Andrea, post tutorial comments in red
Self portrait
Marking time – a photo/video a day
Knitting as slow labour, sculpting by addition
Balancing isolation and separation with comfort and transformation
Loose threads – the mark of making, marks of my hand, unravelling, hairy, abject
Colour palette – flesh
Comforting. Self isolation but fully present. Walk in wearable installation by the time we've finished?
a) Wishing tree
Participatory installation on a tree outside my house. I invited passers-by to bring things to add, but have also added messages from social media. It’s becoming virtual participation too! (I send the virtual participant a photo of their message on the installation) Durational, marking time, documenting each interaction and every day.
How can I weather proof it?
b) Development of this into a Wishing trail on my daily walks. Maybe?
c) @socialengagement on Instagram I set up a new account to share ideas. A virtual gathering. What will it become? A good challenge
d) Idea for a Front Garden Gallery a changing space to show my art, maybe? Maybe its 2m??
Yoko Ono, Wish trees. Differences between hers and mine. You're finding a way to still connect with people.
Make it visible, The care. Giving people a voice? Think about contamination.
'You're a born performer, do you know that?'
Be kind to yourself. The technology is tiring. A level of intimacy though via video, honesty/dialogue?
3. Marking time
a) Every day I open my curtains 1 second video of the view from my bedroom window every morning. I add them to the app, ‘1 Second Everyday’ which will make a composite film when this is all over! How will that view change? Nuances.
b) Documentation of knitting and Wishing tree
4. Contamination anxiety
Dealing with the dark side! The contamination is a real threat now. Fear of the ‘other’. Need to reread Douglas (dirt, contamination anxiety and matter out of place), Kristeva (boundaries, leakiness and the abject) etc and Hegel on Self/Other. The importance of touch – in life and in my work…. I need to be careful, but its a real anxiety about a real thing. The Other is a contaminant.
My darker side has always been there. It's worthy of response. Reality wrapped up in hope.
Afu 'Work is fiction' Be creative and surreal. We're having to work in different ways. Flexibility with constraints. Big events in history are paralleled by movements in the arts. Artists as visionaries. Wishing tree, focal point in the neighbourhood, a different economy, not gallery based.
5. Invisible, collaboration with Hannah
I’m going to make a plain canvas wearable sculpture, Hannah will paint a large backdrop and then paint the sculpture so that it’s camouflaged.
6. Other ideas/materials/processes
Concrete/cardboard/clay/wax/painting/found materials
I'm not reading, but being kind to ourselves is most important atm.
