3.3.21 Possible materials for Social Knitwork

  1. Cascade 220
The wool I use normally is 100% pure wool and is called Cascade 220. It comes in a fabulous selection of colours but it comes from the States and is made in Peru! I normally get it from a couple of different suppliers, depending on availability/colours etc. I have noticed however, that the places I normally use have had limited stocks and very slow delivery recently; probably an inevitable side effect of the pandemic, of course, or the fact that apparently everyone has taken up knitting during lockdown!

If we want to go for this, I think the most reliable companies to work with are Love Crafts and Wool Warehouse. Both charge £6.99 for 100g retail, but you can see how depleted their stocks are. There are approx. 200m per skein, and I tend to use 2 strands, so it works out at £6.99 per 100m (2 strands).

2. Other natural materials

I definitely want to work with natural materials and have bought some cotton and jute twine already to trial. I just need to knit some samples with it now and see how it weathers outside.

Jute craft twine, 2mm comes in lots of colours 1 kg = £8.75 = approx. 600m per kilo = £1.46 per 100m

Cotton string, 3mm diam, cream, 1kg = £8.81 =525m per kilo =£1.67 per 100m

Another alternative is Macrame string 2mm, which also comes in wonderful colours 1 kg= £15.48 = approx 600m = £2.58 per 100m. It will probably be thick enough just to use one strand
