9.11.20 Reflections on the sensorial in my practice
sensorial
/sɛnˈsɔːrɪəl/
adjective
In the first week of the first lockdown in England, I reflected on the importance of touch in my work here 22.3.20 Textiles and touch. Clearly, with the new restrictions of the pandemic, I was concerned especially about this aspect of my practice.
Until now I have relied mostly on the senses of sight and touch in my work. Smell has been a unexpected bonus of using imitation leather from Scrapstore for my Nobodies series in 2014 -15 and second hand clothing for Don't wash your dirty laundry in public in 2016 and The presence of absence at B-Wing exhibition, Shepton Mallet prison in 2019.
During this module, in a video of me wearing my Body cage, I was delighted with the sound that the sculpture made as I walked. It clanked! It was unexpected, but a welcome addition to the sense of sight.
I have yet to use the sense of taste in my practice.
