I thoroughly enjoyed creating this site responsive installation by stapling it to the walls, floor, ceiling and door of the little toilet in the Garage during my residency there. I have reflected previously on Staple as stitch but I haven't ever constructed a piece in this way. I loved how immediate it was, and how it enabled me to fill a relatively large space in a relatively short time. Again, it felt like performative making as I used my whole body. I used a staple gun for the hard surfaces and an ordinary stapler to staple the different fabrics together, in situ.
I was thrilled by the intuitive making. It was so absorbing and became so sculptural. I had taken along various light coloured fabrics with different skin-like surfaces - canvas, fake fur, an old duvet, imitation leather. I cut and stapled and stood back and repeated. I also stapled in some zips so that it was possible to peep through to see the toilet etc.
And here's a time-lapse video of part of the installation of Flesh at The Garage:
I was delighted with the final result, but felt it was a sketch, rather than a finished piece, so I deconstructed it and installed my red knitting instead. A busy day!
