Metal cages at Real Space, 11.3-31.3.21
I was very grateful to Sarah and Tim, and also to Si, Poppy and Ross, (the technicians) for supporting me to construct two metal cages in the Michael Pennie gallery during the Real Space residency there. It was extremely useful for me to be able to trial various installations in these large constructed spaces. I also read what Mary Douglas said about psychoanalyst Marion Milner's ideas of Framing and creative illusion. Regarding the two cages I built as frames for my work, as well as hanging devices, was extremely useful. I am very interetsed in the idea of apparition or illusion in my work so using a cage as a boundary for that is compelling.
After the residency I planned to rebuild the second, enclosed, larger cage in The Street at Locksbrook and wrote a proposal for that idea. In the end though, Andrea felt that the cage would distract from the subtleties of my work and I agreed.
Here is my proposal for building a cage in The Street, anyway. It documents my work with cages at Real Space and also provides some background to my thinking:

11.9.21 I see clearly how my work with these cages has informed the design of my final ensemble. The ideas around hanging my knitting horizontally, for example, using chains and steel wire developed into the metal curves of my assemblages. I have also been greatly influenced by Penelope Curtis' book about different ways of positioning sculpture and the meanings implicit in how they are installed.
