Metal connectors for lead hands, 5. & 6.7.21
Design ideas: metal connectors for lead hands
Again after much thought and discussion with Si, we came up with a design for a connector which could be set into the lead hands. It will make transport and storage much easier to have the hands as separate components, but also, I hope that the rough aesthetic of a steel tube protruding from the hand, with a welded nut and bolt will make the hand seem even more uncanny. It makes me think of the stereotypes of Frankenstein's monster, constructed crudely with bolts through his neck. The reality of the Mary Shelley's story of Frankenstein is obviously much more subtle and poignant, about humanness and othering. I feel this will add something significant to the final assemblages.
The design of these pieces will enable me to swivel the hands on the metal rod so that the hands can face different directions. I think they will be very effective. The squashed end is to prevent the lead pouring up the tube, but also to fix the connector solidly.
