I decided to practice cutting and hammering steel by making a series of steel hoops. I envisage making a canvas soft sculpture which I will squeeze into them so that the sculpture is bulging between the restraints. It's a development of my Body cage, and I'm using new metalwork skills.

I am very pleased with this result. I actually used a piece of rusty steel that had some wax on it, left over from another student's explorations, and I think that the marks the wax, rust and dirt make add something to this piece. It is such a contrast to the straight lines and neat joins of Body cage 1. The way the surface of the hammered steel reflects light is very different to the surface of the straight cut and bent steel. I think this piece has some impact just as it is. I tried several layouts and angles in a photoshoot and found some interesting permutations. To me it looks like a shed skin, or broken shackles...
I do still plan to develop this, by combining it with a bulging textile soft sculpture, but I haven't yet had a chance to do it. Sometimes I find that waiting and thinking before acting makes for the best result....
