Concrete feet 1, 5.10 - 19.10.20
I am delighted with these concrete feet. For some reason they're almost purple, probably from the silicon? The surface is intriguing, with quite a few air bubbles. I think the fact that they're concrete and not Jesmonite makes them easier to read. Concrete is a material that everyone is familiar with, we are surrounded by it. It's part of our built environment. I don't think that most people would know what Jesmonite is, and although it allegedly looks like concrete, now that I see these feet, I don't think it does! The Jesmonite is much more managed and smooth than this, less familiar. I think these concrete feet communicate a different set of meanings. To me they look much more like dead feet, or as Si suggested 'swamp woman'?
I wonder whether the next pair will be purple too? And will the colour fade or the surface change? Gareth suggested casting my whole body in concrete and it's tempting. It would be astonishing to make a concrete cast body, but maybe body parts are sufficient?
I'm planning to cast at least 3 pairs of concrete feet. I have set steel tubes in this pair, but this time, the tube goes all the way to the sole of the foot. This means that the steel self portraits that I made for MF7003 won't work with these feet as they have a different fitting. I have made one metal form, Metal sculpture 5, that does work with these cast concrete feet. I set it up as a Trial assemblage, with Body cocoon 4, but it still won't balance! I have decided though that the fact that they won't stand independently adds a sense of precarity to the assemblages which I think is highly appropriate.
Could these concrete feet be exhibited as they are? Should I cast some without the rod fitting? I do find them extremely compelling, just as they are. If I'm going to use them as part of another set of assemblages I feel as if it would be more interesting to do something different with them. I need to give this more thought.
